dc.description.abstract The aim of this thesis was to examine the major social, economic and political transformations in Kofale Wäräda after the 1941 land grant and taxation reform of emperor Hӓilasillassiѐ and to assess the impact of the 1975 Land Reform Proclamation of the Därg. Thus, the main themes were the social, political and economic changes in the district after these two reforms. It also shows the interrelationship between these themes. In dealing with the subject, I have attempted to utilize the available archival materials, published and unpublished works as well as informants. Based on the collected sources, my study attempted to assess how much the post- 1941 land grant and taxation reform of the emperor and the 1975 of the Därg contributed great inputs in changing the social and economic life of the people of Kofale district. The major historical events that were discussed in this thesis were organized chronologically and thematically. To this end, the work was arranged in four parts. The first part presents introduction: it discuses topics like location, physical landscapes and foundation of the district. The second part deals with historical survey of the district to 1941. It presents topics like: early settlement pattern, origin of the Arsi Oromo and their social organization. In addition the chapter discusses Menilek conquest and the subsequent developments in the area and it also discusses Kofale under the Italian rule. The third part deals with the social, economic and political transformation in the district after the land grant and taxation reform of the 1941 and assesses its impacts on the actual life of the Arsi of Kofale district. The fourth part presents changes in the district following Land Reform Proclamation of 1975 and it also assesses significant social changes toward minority group in the district after 1975 Proclamation. It also assesses developmental activity like villagization and state farm in the area, in line with this it discusses their major impact on the life of the Arsi in Kofale district. The study begins with the analyses of the post-1941 developments in the district. The 1941 land grant and taxation reform of the emperor revived the old gäbbar system and the Arsi Oromo in the district suffers a lot from the system. Contrary, the 1975 land proclamation helped the Arsi in Kofale district to be free from the yoke of the näftañña gäbbar system. Following the 1975 land reform proclamation there was transformation towards socially marginalized community in the district, which evolved as a result of the shift of social changes in the district. The thesis also shades light on cattle breeding center and state farm in the district and it also examines their impacts on the local people. en_US
